PR TIMES「Jooto」

English version
1. Investigating the recent case
On August 6, 2026, PR TIMES decided to end general availability of Jooto, its task and project-management SaaS, on July 31, 2027 and discontinue the business. Jooto offered web and mobile apps, APIs, AI-related features, implementation support, and business-process redesign. It had 2,379 paid customer companies as of the end of July. This was not a small experiment: it was a meaningful attempt to help teams make work visible and move projects forward.
The company had tried pricing changes, product improvements, stronger sales and customer-success work, generative-AI features, and wider individual development projects. Yet it concluded that it had not established a durable competitive advantage in new-customer acquisition, retention and expansion, enterprise adoption, or turning custom work into a repeatable offering. Fiscal 2026 revenue was ¥387 million with an operating loss of ¥17 million; the March–May quarter also remained loss-making. New registrations stopped immediately, while existing customers receive roughly a year to continue and migrate. A separate Toyota-specific work-management tool remains in service.
2. Analysis based on the case
The key question was not simply whether Jooto was losing money. It was whether further investment could realistically turn it into an independent growth business. Task-management software is crowded: customers compare broad global platforms, local vertical tools, and capabilities embedded in chat or document products. More features alone do not create a lasting reason to choose one service.
For PR TIMES, continuing to allocate people and capital to Jooto also meant passing over other opportunities. The company explicitly said that the fact of having taken on a challenge should not itself justify continued investment. That is a healthy way to avoid letting past effort dictate future choices. The timing is notable too: after setting a profitability goal in April, the company reviewed the evidence from the next quarter and changed course while it could still provide an orderly transition.
3. What could have been done differently?
The lesson is not that the team failed to try hard enough. It is that a new business needs early signals that are specific enough to guide a strategic fork. For enterprise adoption, teams should track not only customer count but also expansion across departments, reasons for churn, account-level economics including implementation, and the concrete reasons they win or lose against competitors.
One possible route would have been to narrow the product sooner: rather than competing as a general task manager, it might have focused on PR and communications workflows, connecting planning, approvals, distribution, and measurement with PR TIMES. Another would have been to define a firm rule for converting custom-development learning into product features, while treating non-repeatable work as a separate service. These are outside-looking hypotheses, not verdicts; each would still have required time and investment.
4. Future path and lessons
Jooto shows that an exit can be a responsible reallocation rather than an admission of failure. PR TIMES has committed to migration support, data export, settlement, service quality, and security through the transition. It also plans, in principle, to reassign its 15 Jooto employees gradually to other businesses. Respect for customers and colleagues makes the decision a platform for the next challenge.
Three lessons stand out: set review criteria alongside success criteria from the start; preserve customer knowledge, technology, and people even if a product name disappears; and budget time and money for a responsible exit. Designing an exit does not weaken commitment. It gives a team the confidence to experiment, learn from evidence, and move its resources to the place where they can create more value.
